A Rare Case of Hamman Syndrome

Abstract

Pneumomediastinum is a clinical entity which is characterized by the collection of air in the mediastinum. Spontaneous idiopathic pneumomediastinum is a rare self-limited condition which is seen in 1 in 30,000 Emergency Department referrals. It is commonly seen in young men, with an average age of 20–30 years. The most common symptoms are chest pain and swelling. Diagnosis involves imaging and tests to rule out etiologies of secondary pneumomediastinum. Treatment is conservative management. Patient does not develop complications and this disease is associated with a good prognosis. We have presented this case of a young boy with this rare syndrome.
